The twelve months of 1920 was memorable for many different happenings. In that year, the Mexican Revolution took place and by the end of 1920 there was a big change of govt and there was in addition the Irish war of independence. During 1920 there was quite a few local regional battles and skirmishes in Europe after the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles which terminated that conflict becomes effective on January 10th, legally putting an end to WW 1. Nevertheless, on March 19th the USA Senate declined to ratify the Treaty of Versailles. On January the 16th, The League of Nations Covenant comes into force with the institution having their initial council conference in Paris, France. Additional conflicts during 1920 included the Palestine riots on April 4 with physical violence ocurring among Arab and Jewish people in Jerusalem where 9 were killed and also 216 injured. On December the 17th the Mendoza quake of magnitude 6.0 resulted in the deaths of about 200 people in Mendoza Province, Argentina.
Various other noteworthy happenings in 1920 involved the finish to the Spanish Flu epidemic having an estimated 17 to 50 million fatalities. This has been the last global pandemic before the 2009 swine flu epidemic which comes about nearly 90 years after. During August the 1920 Summer Olympic games took place in Antwerp, Belgium. Frederick Banting from Canada first records in his notebook his awareness regarding how to separate insulin for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. It wasn't until two years later that the first successful human test of insulin took place.
